The Hippo Charge - Kwara Camp - Okavango Delta - Botswana

The Hippo Charge - Kwara Camp - Okavango Delta - Botswana

The day had already been amazing. We had arrived at Kwando Kwara Camp in the Okavango Delta and immediately been treated to elephants, giraffe our first lion to mention but a few.

It was time to head to a special lagoon for the traditional Sundowners whilst enjoying a gorgeous sunset.

Someone had other ideas.

George, our fantastic guide and driver spotted a lone hippo in a small lagoon and stopped for us to photograph.

I had four of the group with me and we all trained our lenses on this beast in the water. All I could see was a huge bow wave coming towards us and then, next thing we knew, the hippo was out of the water and charging!

George yelled out for us to hang on and we were off...not! He has popped the clutch and the Landcruiser has bogged down in the soft sand and almost stalled. In with the clutch, a few more revs, and bang, we're off with a huge hippo thundering through the bush at 40 kph after us.

Thankfully, hippos get puffed and Landcruisers don't and we made good our escape whooping and cheering at what had been an adrenaline packed amazing moment.

We were on an incredible high whooping and carrying on that the rest of the group in the two other vehicles could hear us coming a mile off.

WOW!!! What an experience and certainly one that we will all never forget.

But, did we get a shot?

Thankfully, yes. High ISO and fast shutter speed saved the day in the failing light and here is the result.

20140504 011128 Namibia Kalala Sossesvlei MR21969-Edit
The Namib is the world’s oldest desert, and although it stretches along the entire length of Namibia’s coastline, the Namib commonly refers to the vast sea of sand from Luderitz to Swakopmund.
20140503 170450 Sossesvlei DSC03630-Edit
For a big sandy desert the scenery is remarkably varied, with the giant red dunes of Sossusvlei being the most famous part.
Because of how old it is the Namib is home to numerous species that don’t occur elsewhere and although no humans live in the desert an amazing array of flora and fauna manages to survive here.
20140503 154821 Namibia Kalala Sossesvlei MR21669-Edit-Edit
Famous species include the Welwitschia – a living fossil plant, endemic chameleons, fur seals along the coast, brown hyenas, jackals and remarkably one of Africa’s largest antelope the Gemsbok. The name Namib is of Nama origin and means "vast place" and vast it certainly is.
20140507 183227 Okavango MR24694-2
Lying in the middle of the largest expanse of sand on earth the Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most amazing, sensitive and complex environments supporting a spectacle of wilderness and wildlife.
20140506 161120 Okavango MR23518-Edit-Edit
Unique as one of the world’s few inland deltas, the placid waters and lush indigenous forests offer a safe haven for innumerable bird and wildlife species. The Okavango Delta offers a number of activities for the visitor; game viewing, birding and fishing are all on offer.

One can experience this magical world of islands and waterways from land, air and water - game viewing by canoe, traditional mokoro or powerboat.
Highlights include the elusive Sitatunga antelope which has found refuge in this pristine wetland ecosystem, while birds such as the African fish eagle, Pel's fishing owl and many others provide a spectacular display.
20140512 194930 Victoria Falls DSC06229-Edit
One of the original natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls is a World Heritage Site and an extremely popular tourism attraction. Known locally as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ this spectacle is accessible from both Zambia and Zimbabwe and it is an ideal place to combine a game viewing and water sports. There is excellent fishing, a terrifying bungee jump and arguably the best commercial white water rafting in the world.
